Diakonie Prag:

About the Care at Home Project:

Since its founding in 2013, the Institute of Dignity Aging, , which is implemented by the Diakonia of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, has been dedicated to addressing senior issues and strives to improve the quality of life for older adults. Initially, the aim was to support family caregivers through a free telephone counseling service within the Care at Home program. This program, which was unique in the Czech Republic at the time, has gradually expanded to include various types of support and counseling for anyone who chooses to care for their loved ones in a home environment.

The activities of the Care at Home project primarily focus on providing assistance and support to the elderly and their families, particularly through education, support, and counseling across all regions of the Czech Republic. Those who choose to provide care at home often find themselves in situations for which they have not been adequately prepared. Therefore, we offer advice and support not only to those who are new to caregiving but also to those facing significant decisions and changes in their care approach. Through our self-help support groups, we create a safe space for sharing experiences, emotions, and challenges that informal caregivers encounter. Additionally, we invest considerable effort into education and skill-building to ensure that home care is as effective and sustainable as possible.

On average, the length of care provided is ten years, typically shared by a household member who is dependent on the assistance of a woman of retirement age. Other caregivers who are economically active often struggle to maintain full-time employment. As a result, these caregivers face financial challenges, stress-related deprivation, and deteriorating partner relationships. According to data from the Institute for Social Policy and Research of the Further Education Fund, 70-90% of individuals with long-term illnesses and disabilities are cared for by family members and relatives in a home setting. While this care is provided free of charge, it forms a critical pillar of our social and health system, and its importance is increasing in light of the demographic trend toward an aging population.

Future projections indicate a significant rise in the number of beneficiaries of care allowances due to demographic aging, leading to increased public expenditure on these benefits. At the same time, there will be heightened pressure on providers of all types of services—institutional, outpatient, and outreach—as well as on informal caregivers. In the Czech Republic, families provide over 80% of the long-term care for the elderly, making it one of the countries with the highest rates of informal care in Europe.
